The 20th Int. Petroleum Tax Conference 2009

Oslo

Welcome to the 20th International Petroleum Tax Conference.

The 2009 International Petroleum Tax conference represents a significant milestone as the 20th such conference to cover upstream tax issues. The organizing committee would be pleased to welcome as many delegates as possible from Norway and beyond to make this years conference as memorable and informative as those that preceded it. Today’s energy landscape presents unrecognizable challenges to those explored in the first conference back in 1989.  We trust that the 2009 conference Agenda will address many of these in an informative and stimulating environment.

Following the pattern of recent conference Day 1 will focus on the wider energy landscape and fiscal context in Europe and beyond. Day 2 will cover in depth a range of topical fiscal issues that impact the NOCS.

One of the themes of the 2009 conference is to present the diversity of the fiscal landscape from the Equator to the Pole. We have invited Carole Nakhle from the University of Surrey to cover the fiscal terms on offer in the Middle East, with particular reference to Iraq, and expert contributors to cover the less mature but enticing potential of Greenland and Iceland. All these countries are all at the stage of attracting renewed interest from foreign investors but the fiscal approach from policy makers and geopolitical context could not be more different.

The recent unprecedented turmoil in financial markets in combination with continuing oil price volatility presents a new cocktail of uncertainty for policy makers and investors. We are pleased to welcome back Graham Kellas of Wood Mackenzie to provide his own unique insights into the impact of this turmoil on global fiscal trends. This will be balanced by an academic perspective on a similar theme by Peter Osmundsen from the Universityof Stavanger. The impact of the financial crisis on smaller companies and the case for Government assistance will be explored by Øystein Noreng.

The 20th International Petroleum Tax Conference provides a unique opportunity to hear from acknowledged experts in the fiscal and energy field on current Industry trends and challenges. The outstanding conference facilities present a congenial setting to promote extensive networking with colleagues from Europe and beyond.
